My main impression this time was that the animation is rougher than I recalled. Of course this makes perfect sense, because this 1940 movie is the first full-length animated film that Disney released after "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," although the studio was working on "Bambi" at the same time. But in my mind I had the level of animation being more akin to what we see in "Cinderella." But compare the level of animation here with "Steamboat Willie," the first Mickey Mouse cartoon, and you can see the quantum leap that Disney had already taken in the field. When the American Film Institute did its "Ten Top Ten" lists, "Pinocchio" was number two on the list after "Snow White," a judgment that reflects the monumental historical importance of that first cartoon movie, because judged by creative standards "Pinocchio" is the superior film. Watching "Pinocchio" again and going through all of the bonus features on this 70th anniversary Platinum Edition DVD served to reinforce the idea that Walt Disney was a genius, a fact that needs to be driven home to those generation of Disney fans who have been born after his death and do not remember him hosting "The Wonderful World of Disney" on Sunday nights. The two things that stood out to me where the fact that when Walt took that first big gamble with "Snow White" (critics the colors are too ight, they will hurt people's eyes to watch a cartoon that runs an hour), he already had his new two animated features in the pipeline, and that he insisted the songs in his movies move the story along. Both of those ideas are taken for granted today, but you have to put things in the context of the times. Walt Disney is the Moses who gets animation from "Gertie the Dinosaur" to the latest computer animated effort from the folks at Pixar. The mantle might have been passed, but let's not forget who the person responsible for the mantle. Kids might like the Games Activities included on the second disc in this set and may even recognize Meaghan Jette Martin, who sings the updated version of "When You Wish Upon a Star" in the requisite music video (Sorry, nothing tops Cliff Edwards as Jiminy Cricket singing that particular song). For me the attraction is all of the Bakcstage Disney materials, with the Never-Before-Seen Deleted Scens and Alternat Ending, the All-New "Making of 'Pinocchio'" featurette and the proverbial "Much, Much More!" From the start, these Platinum Editions from Disney have been designed to cater to those of us who want to be more than casual fans of these classic full-length cartoons. When they began putting these out the gold standard in DVD extras were the Criterion Collection films, but these Disney Platinum Editions routinely exceed those efforts. We would be happy just to have this film on DVD, but Disney is committed to preserving its legacy by treating these classic films like cinematic heirlooms. I have not seen a Disney Plantinum Edition that was not worth owning, and if for some reason you felt compelled to limit yourself to only five of them, then "Pinocchio" would have to be one of those five. Actually, I think if you only had one of them, this would be the one (although " Note: The review that follows is of the 70th Anniversary edition that includes Blu-ray and DVD discs. I first saw Pinocchio soon after it appeared on movie screens in 1939 and have since seen it more than a dozen times. Based on Carlo Collodi's children's classic, it remains my favorite Disney animated feature, the first to be released as a DVD and is now available in both Blu-ray and High Definition, also for the first time. It has never looked better. The two-disc Platinum 70th Anniversary Edition supplements the 88-minute film with a wealth of bonus features that include never-before-seen deleted scenes, a never-before-seen alternative ending, the "Pinocchio Knows Trivia Challenge," "Pleasure Island Carnival Games," the "No Strings Attached" featurette on making the film, and an audio commentary by Leonard Maltin (film critic and historian), Eric Goldberg (Disney animator and director), and J.B. Kaufman (film historian and author). These bonus features are indeed special. As is also true of so many later Disney animated features (notably Dumbo in 1941, Bambi in 1942, Peter Pan in 1953, and Beauty and the Beast in 1991), the film Pinocchio examines several themes that include a child's or children's separation from loved ones, efforts to reunite them, serious (sometimes life-threatening) dangers to be overcome, lessons learned from all the struggles, and of course the happy ending. Of course, children's reactions to Pinocchio will vary depending upon age. (My ten grandchildren range from two to 17.) Younger ones may become upset by certain scenes, as when the little boys on Pleasure Island become donkeys, but "children of all ages" - including parents and grandparents - will thoroughly enjoy the musical score as well as Jiminy Cricket whose voice is provided by Cliff Edwards. This is one of Disney's loveliest and most charming films. In a survey conducted by the American Film Institute in 2008, Pinocchio was ranked #2 among the ten greatest animated features. (Note: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was #1, then Pinocchio, followed by Bambi, The Lion King, Fantasia, Toy Story, Beauty and the Beast, Shrek, Cinderella, and Finding Nemo.) It will be interesting to see how the rankings change in years to come as other excellent animated features (e.g. Ratatouille, Wall-E, and Bolt) begin to attract more attention and appreciation. I look forward to watching Pinocchio for many more years to come, hopefully with great grandchildren and their parents as well as friends. My guess is that, however technologically advanced our society has become by then, the magic dust of Disney's animated film classics will continue to be as potent as ever. "When you wish upon a star, makes no difference who youpare, anything you heart desires will come to you."pYou've heard this song on the Disneyland and Superbowl commercials, but do you remember where it came from?pIt came from this cartoon, Pinocchio, Walt Disney's second feature to "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" in 1940.pI repeat 1940!! Wow and to this day ,Pinocchio still stands out as one of the greatest movies of all time.pThis opinion is about the 60th anniversay VHS of Pinocchio with THX sound and Remastered visual footage. It even has a bonus at the end about the making of Pinocchio!!! Wow.pThis was a Christmas gift for my best friend and she loved it, and I can see why.pPinocchio is filled with dazzling animation, music and filled with so much fun and happyness that at the end of the movie , you will feel like wishing upon a star youreself.pPinocchio is about a wooden puppet made by toymaker Geppeto (Christian Rub) who wants his own son.pGeppeto makes one wish, to have his own son. Geppeto gets his wish when the Blue Fairy ings Pinocchio to life!!!pIt took nearly 700 animators and technicians to ing Pinocchio to life and the hard work definitely shows!!!pPeople can say whatever they want about Disney current movies, true they lack a certain magic unlike their cherish cartoon like Pinocchio, but Disney is one of a few companies that has a SOLID record of making Cartoon Classics that are loved by everyone.pThe fairy ings Pinocchio to life and promises to Pinoccho (voice of Dickie Jones) that he will remain a real boy if he follows the basic principles that every boy should have.pHe has to be loyal, truthful and above fair. She assigns Jiminy Cricket (Cliff Edwards) to be Pinocchio's conscience.pWell it sounds easy at first, but living up to these values is the real challenge here and Pinocchio tries his best to follow them, but since he has just being turned into a boy he doesnt yet know right from wrong.pThis is where we meet characters like ,J. Worthington Foulfellow, Stromboli and Barker who take advantage of the young boy.pJiminy Cricket and the fairy save Pinocchio from his judgement calls ,but yet Pinocchio doesnt learn to tell the truth and when he lies his nose starts to grow like a Christmas tree. :-pMeanwhile Geppeto is looking for Pinocchio and ends up being captured by a giant whale Monstro!!!pPinocchio saves Geppeto in a illian animation sequence and Pinocchio by displaying avery ends up being a real boy permanently.pIt's a classic, I can say more but I dont want to spoil it for anyonepIn an age, where moral, illiant, wholesome cartoons are scarce you look back to the classics and Pinocchio will forever stand out as one of the greatest classics ever made by Walt Disney who has left his print in the world and in children's hearts.pGo out and buy this for youre children Almost all Disney movies are based on dreams that became a reality in the end. Here in this movie Gepetto (Wood Carver) who wished for Pinocchio to become a real boy.You may say this is just a movie but it discusses one very important aspect of life. Its very important for young kids to say the TRUTH or you may end up like Pinocchio. When He kept telling lies his nose grew longer eventhough he's been warned by Jiminy Cricket (his conscience)to tell the truth. It also discusses true friendship and trust. Jiminy Cricket was upset when Pinocchio told him that he's with his best friend (other kid)on Treasure Island, Jiminy thought he is the bestfriend of Pinocchio. Above all, this is one very touching film. This certainly is not one of my favorite Disney movies. I just really didn't get in to the movie I guess but then I never really cared for this Fairy Tale either. The voice actors are good and the scenery, and colors are great. But for some reason this one really just didn't hit home for me.This legendary animated feature is surely beyond criticism by now and, furthermore, it's unlikely that we'll see such forceful narrative in a kids' cartoon ever again. Disney's treatment of Collodi's story of the little wooden puppet who wants nothing more than to be a real boy is always guaranteed to have audiences entranced. While some of the movie's success is derived from its liberal use of the kind of imagery no children's film-maker would even attempt to get past the storyboard stage today--a mysterious island where children smoke cigars, get drunk and turn into donkeys, a monstrous, malicious sea-creature which is devoid of any trace of cuddliness and a pair of villains who routinely abduct children, to give just a few examples--the characters are depicted with the finest attention to detail, most of the songs have become classics in their own right ("When You Wish Upon a Star" being only one of many) and the graceful, stylised animation positively glows with fine detail. Essential family viewing. I--Roger ThomasIThis 60th anniversary edition includes IThe Making of PinocchioI, featuring a behind-the-scenes look at how Walt Disney created this classic.p Fully restored, digitally remastered, and THX-certified video. This Disney masterpiece from 1940 will hold up forever precisely because it doesn't restrain or temper the most elemental emotions and themes germane to its story. Based on the Collodi tale about a wooden puppet who wants to become a real boy, iPinocchioi is among the most magical, mythical, and frightening films to come from the studio in its long history. A number of scenes make permanent impressions on young minds (just ask Steven Spielberg, who quoted the film more than once in iClose Encounters of the Third Kindi, and the songs ("When You Wish upon a Star") can't be beat. i--Tom Keoghi My Fair Lady (WidescreenMy Fair Lady (WidescreenMy Fair Lady (WidescreenMy Fair Lady (WidescreenMy Fair Lady (WidescreenMy Fair Lady (WidescreenMy Fair Lady (WidescreenThe Sound of Music (40th Anniversary Widescreen EditionMy Fair Lady (WidescreenThe Sound of Music (40th Anniversary Widescreen EditionThe Audrey Hepburn DVD CollectionMy Fair Lady (WidescreenThe Sound of Music (40th Anniversary Widescreen EditionThe Audrey Hepburn DVD CollectionSingin' in the Rain (Full Screen Special Edition, 2 DiscsMy Fair Lady (WidescreenThe Sound of Music (40th Anniversary Widescreen EditionThe Audrey Hepburn DVD CollectionSingin' in the Rain (Full Screen Special Edition, 2 DiscsMary Poppins: 45th Anniversary EditionMy Fair Lady (WidescreenThe Sound of Music (40th Anniversary Widescreen EditionThe Audrey Hepburn DVD CollectionSingin' in the Rain (Full Screen Special Edition, 2 DiscsMary Poppins: 45th Anniversary EditionOliver! The quality was so good, at one point in the movie I though, "This movie looks like a new-release or something!". Definitely worth your money! The Bonus Features DVD is really impressive. Well that's about all I have for this particular DVD. I have always hated this movie. From the moment I saw it as a child I could never understand why a lively, independent, joyous creature would choose to enter a world of repressed Victorian womanhood. The beautiful sets, lavish costumes and show tunes masked a sad future for a winsome innocent who is last seen inging slippers to a tyrannical over bearing ogre old enough to be her grandfather. I am amazed people regard this as a romantic movie. I wish they had focused totally on Eliza and her life in the streets. There are worse things in life than selling flowers and this movie proves it beyond a shadow of a doubt. This has to be the all-time best movie musical ever made. Now, I don't generally like or watch this stuff, but the cast, the print, the recording, everything is superb. It seems like it was made only last week. I put this up against Merchant Ivory films and period pieces (The Importance of Being Earnest, Enchanted April, etc) and it holds up as well if not better. Of course Rex Harrison is remarkable, but my only complaint was that they didn't let Hepburn sing herself. I recently saw a documentary on this film, and they compared her singing voice with the one that was dubbed. Her's was more real and I really saw no need for that. But aside from that, Cukor's direction is without a flaw and the entire movie seems like ten minutes instead of its actual running time. If you have to buy one musical, and even if you don't like them, this is the one to get. There's not a thing more I can say but "Buy it!" Professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison) who specializes in the English language makes a bet with Colonel Hugh Pickering (Wilfrid Hyde-White) that he can take someone who speaks with a lower-class language and by correcting the speech can pass off as upper-class or royalty. Overhearing this bet is a flower girl Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn); she wants to work a flower stand. But they will not take her unless she can speak more "genteel". Professor Higgins takes up the challenge. Will he succeed? What does her father (Stanley Holloway) thing finding that she moved in whit the two professors and did not want any clothes? This is a musical version of the movie Pygmalion (1938), based on a play by George Bernard Shaw. As people find that music and movies ing memories of the time in which they heard or viewed it. His movie has a meaning to me as I too was in love and found my self singing "On the street where you live." One of the strengths of the movie is that many of the songs instead of being classical and just stuffed into at odd times actually are songs that you would initiate in your life and they did so in the lives of the characters in the movie. MFL is a marvellous film about a professor who turns a common flower girl into a lady. It is full of sing-a-long songs and funny moments. It is basically a classic for all the right reasons! Plenty of re-watch factor makes it a film to own.pIn 1994, the film was restored and thank the lord they did! The film's negative was almost lost forever. In fact, the film hade had become yellow-tinged and full of scratches, blotches and all the rest! It would have been a very sad day for the movie industry if a flim like this had been lost.pThe original DVD that featured this new restoration was released in the late 90's. This DVD included a 9 minute featurette, actor profiles, audio commentary, and Audrey Hepburn singing in 2 scenes.pThis original 1-disc DVD has since been updated to a special 2-Disc Edition. Which one to get? I have both so I feel qualified to answer this. The new DVD includes all the features found on the original DVD, except the actor profiles. The new DVD once again includes the restored print but is apparently a new transfer from the restored print. However, according to a report that I have read, the new transfer is not perfect and has aliasing problems throughout. However, the average watcher won't pick up on this detail. If this is an issue to you, purchase the original edition DVD where the transfer has been given two thumbs up! One has to wonder why they bothered transferring a second time.pThe advantage of the special 2-Disc Edition DVD is that it includes a 58 minute 1994 documentary hosted by Jeremy Brett (Audrey's love interest in the film). Jeremy is no longer with us, so it's nice to have this as a piece of nostalgia. ON top of this, there are many more features on this disc that aren't included on the original DVD such as footage from the film's premiere, production dinner, as well as discussions with Rex and Audrey.pThe choice is easy. If you're a fan of the film and don't care for all the extras, buy the original DVD. You at least get the best transfer. If you do care about having all the extras, buy both!Hollywood's legendary "woman's director", George Cukor iThe Womeni, iThe Philadelphia Storyi, transformed Audrey Hepburn into street-urchin-turned-proper-lady Eliza Doolittle in this film version of the Lerner and Loewe musical. Everyone knows the tale of the magical nanny that blows in on the east wind and into the lives of the Banks family of 17 Cherry Tree Lane. Jane and Michael Banks have had a succession of strict nannies as well as a very strict father and a mother who is always out with her fellow suffragettes. Mary Poppins ings magic and fun into the children's lives, something that has been sorely lacking prior to her arrival. Julie Andrews stars as the nanny and Dick Van Dyke as the lovable cockney Bert, (just forgive his dreadful accent) who always seems to be around at the right time for an adventure. The children find themselves having outings such as jumping into a chalk picture into a cartoon world, having a tea-party on a ceiling and dancing across the rooftops of London. Stuffed to the gills with songs such as 'Spoonful of Sugar', 'Chim Chim Cheree', 'Feed the Birds' and 'Jolly Holiday', this will have you tapping your foot throughout. This 40th anniversary edition is on 2 discs and features lots of extras such as a documentary, commentary, footage of the premieres etc. The quality of print is very high, the colours have never looked so vi ant and the picture is razor sharp. Wonderful stuff. I have not always been a big fan of this movie, but I realized that I was wrong. Julie Andrews performance is and always will be outstanding in this movie. I think all of us at one time wish we could make an interesting entrance via floating in from the sky through an um ella. She makes work turned into fun when she gets the children Jane and Michael Banks to clean up the nursery. With the help from Bert, she uses her imagination when she, Bert and the children jump into a sidewalk drawing. Or when Mary and the children go to a tea party on the ceiling! This movie definately has plenty of special effects, especially when it was created in a time when there no computers. Not to mention lots of imaginative and creative ideas that would captivate both children and adults alike. This is a review for the new 2-disc Disney 40th Anniversary edition of Mary Poppins. This is one of the best re-releases of this year. The movie is STILL(and will be for years to come) an aural and visual delight and designed for families and people of all ages. Interweaving a wonderful story with some ground eaking techniques and special effects Disney took/takes us on a magical ride in a recreated slice of life from 1910. The story,by now familiar to many, involves the arrival to the Banks household of a nanny(Julie Andrews). In short order she manages to shake the prim and proper Banks household to its Edwardian core and teaches them, especially the "master" of his realm Mr.Banks(David Tomlinson),that there are more important things in life than strict adherence to schedule, rules and blind duty to ones'job.Bert(Dick Van Dyke),a friend to Mary, assists her whenever and wherever he can. Julie Andrews plays her character with a wonderful reserve befitting the part and she sings beautifully.Whenever Mary gets too stodgy though Bert, played phenomenally by Dick Van Dyke,is always there to ease the atmosphere and put a smile on everyones' face. The entire cast from the children, the servants to the admiral and the policeman all turn in a superb supporting job from beginning to end. The restored print and accompanying sound track have been given the deluxe Disney treatment.Visually I have not seen as good a print of this film since I first saw it during its' premier in Toronto in late 1964.The versions I have seen over the years either on TV or on video just don't come close to this one. My particular benchmark test was the colour and detail of the panoramic view(with special attention to the sky)when they climb the "smoke stairway" and gaze out over a late in the day city of London. It is stunningly beautiful and was as I remembered it after all this time. That cinched it for me. Aurally the liner notes tell us that the sound has been remastered into a Dolby 5.1 "Theatre Mix"(the original 2.0 theatrical mix is also included). Translation:"Fantastic". The movie never sounded as clean or as good.I couldn't help but to sing and tap my feet to all the numbers. The set is loaded with a surfeit of extras that will satisfy even the most picky of movie buffs from footage of its' opening premiere in L.A. to a making-of special. So grab the popcorn, get yourself seated comfortably on the sofa, turn down the lights and slip into the magical world of Mary Poppins like you've never experienced before. Oh yes a heads up, grab the hankies for the "Feed the Birds" scene/number....you'll need it. Mary Poppins is my favorite movie. I love the charictors, the singing, the dancing. It is fun for the whole family. When I was alittle girl I watched it over and over again. I love to dance with the chimeny sweeps; I can't do everything they do, but still. This is the best master piece Walt Disney ever created besides Micky and friends. I love it and I am a teen.pIt is about a fun nanny who has magic. That is probobly why I like her. There is never a dull moment when Mary Poppins is around: fox hunting, laughing in the air, riding a merry-go-round without the going arout. One of the best parts of all, supercalafagilisticexpialadocious. I have a preschooler and a kindergartener. They both watch it together. They get up and dance to "Step in Time" and "A Spoon Full of Sugar". We purchased the music CD, and listening in the car, makes the time go faster. There is only one word that comes close to accurately describing the enchanting iMary Poppinsi, and that term was coined by the movie itself: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even at 2 hours and 20 minutes, Disney's pioneering mixture of live action and animation (based on the books by P.L. Travers) still holds kids spellbound. Julie Andrews won an Oscar as the world's most magically idealized nanny ("practically perfect in every way," and complete with lighter-than-air um ella), and Dick Van Dyke is her clownishly charming beau, Bert the chimney sweep. The songs are also terrific, ranging from ight and cheery ("A Spoonful of Sugar") to dark and cheery (the Oscar-winning "Chim-Chim Cheree") to touchingly melancholy ("Feed the Birds"). Many consider iMary Poppinsi to be the crowning achievement of Walt Disney's career--and it was the only one of his features to be nominated for a best picture Academy Award until iBeauty and the Beasti in 1991. i--Jim EmersoniThere is only one word that comes close to accurately describing the enchanting iMary Poppinsi, and that term was coined by the movie itself: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! There are trivia questions on each disc that test even the most ardent fan. With Patrick McGoohan's recent death, this has become even more of a collector's edition. So says the new number Two in an early episode of The Prisoner while watching him getting ready for a new day in the Village. By the way the following review is for the 40th Anniversary Collectors Edition of The Prisoner. This 10 DVD set contains many extras and they include the following: -Rare 8mm and 16mm colour footage of The Prisoner on location in 1966 -A 50 minute special "The Prisoner Video Companion" -the alternate version of "Chimes of Big Ben" -rare foreign file cabinet and intro and outro footage -all the production and series trailers -picture galleries for all eps and for the /67 press conference -interactive map of The Village -lots of trivia -a fold out map of The Village -a wonderful interview with the production manager for the series -and a 60 page illustrated booklet containing synopses of all the episodes plus many other bits of Prisoner patter The only thing missing are interviews with any of the cast including Mr.McGoohan who is conspicuous by his absence but there are many quotes both visually and in print from him. Each of the ten discs come in a slim slipcase with annotated info on each ep,behind the scene factoids and some info on the "order" debate. With regards to the latter I would rather have had this series been released in the original order it was back in /67 than in the more fan friendly version it is in in this set(which is by no means perfect). Now,as in /67 when I first saw this series,I just considered it like a giant jigsaw puzzle. All the pieces were scattered on the table but all one had to do was put them all together and in time the picture would reveal itself.I would like to think Mr.McGoohan himself had a reason for releasing them in the manner he did. However at least they are all here for us to enjoy in any way we feel like seeing them! The picture quality is slightly weaker on the earlier eps than in the later ones with more defects and what I like to call digital shimmering in evidence. In fact the alternate "Chimes" ep is not in good condition at all ....dirty,blemished,colour faded and a terrible sound variance.I suspect little was done to this one but it's at least fortunate that we still have it with us today for comparison purposes,if nothing else. The show itself,as you all probably know by now,is about an agent(arguably John Drake, aka Danger/Secret Agent man) who is kidnapped and taken to a place called The Village. Here he daily undergoes physical and especially mental travails from his captors in order to extract the reason(s) for his resignation and any other pertinent information thereof. The show delves into just about every conceivable discipline which concerns human beings in this world and their condition be it past, present or future. It was a series produced and conceived by the fertile and wonderful mind of its' star Patrick McGoohan and astoundingly much of it was filmed on the fly and illiantly executed with his talented crew and cast members. It's like a good book which you cannot put down for a second lest you miss some little juicy tidbit of information or special nuance or subtle sub-text.Through it all you come to question your own condition and all one takes for granted in their lives.Freedom...Reality....what are they? Who,if anyone,is working in my best interests? Who is the real enemy ? All these questions and so many, many more are touched on throughout this rollercoaster ride with the protagonist. His search is our search and as many questions as he raises, they spawn many more. I could go on and on but if you have not seen this series I will leave its' interpretations to you......because yours is as valid as any others. And this is what Patrick McGoohan had in mind I suspect right from the start. And this is what makes this arguably the best and smartest show ever to grace the TV airwaves. It may have debuted 40 years ago this year but it has lost NONE of its' impact or appeal. In fact I daresay it has MORE to say to us than ever before. This is not so much a review of the series itself, which I find to be excellent, but on a bit of symbolism. In virtually every episode, the main character insists "I am not a number. I am a free man!" Why, then, does the main character never say his name? And why is he called "Number Six," and not some other number? I suspect part of the answer goes back to the medieval character of "Everyman," who represents an individual person apart from his or her society. Not specifying a name may be because the character represents all of us. Certainly this theme is commonly identified with the series, and has been discussed many times before. But what I have yet to see discussed is the biblical connection. In Jewish and Christian scripture, the number six represents the sixth day of creation when God created Man, male and female. The number six is thus recognized in He ew numerology and Christian apocalyptic prophecy as "the number of Man." Thus, calling the main character Number Six may be saying, "you are Man." I believe that is why he is called "Number Six." As Everyman and as Number Six, he represents us all. i want to say first off that i'm a huge prisoner fan. i loved the series from beginning to end for all that it is. this review will be only of the dvd box set. ok, the audio and video quality are fantastic. but here's my gripe: 10 discs for a 17 episode series? talk about being greedy! they could have easily had 4 episodes to a disc. even if it were 3 episodes per disc leaving the final disc chock full of extras that would nearly cut this set's size in half. speaking of which the extras in this set are nothing special. theres not even an interview with patrick mcgoohan! i'm lucky i got mine at a bargain or else i never would have bothered. There are no greater television shows than "The Prisoner". Not ever. Perhaps shows such as "MASH" or "Twin Peaks" rise high enough to catch a glimpse of Patrick McGoohan's Big Idea racing off into the distance but they will never catch up. "The Prisoner" is one of the few works of art in the twentieth century that actually deserve to be called revolutionary. But, Patrick McGoohan, the show's creator and star, has no time whatsoever to rebel against things that lesser figures and would-be rebels wish to rebel against -stoking up the fires of their tiny egos. McGoohan means business and his series, "The Prisoner" rushes up to all of the Big Questions and grabs them by the neck. "The Prisoner" is a declared war against tyranny in all of its forms: sexual attraction, the lure of comfort, the facade of democratic politics, science, fundamentalist anti-science, conservatism, cheap liberal progressivism, group-think in any form at all including "individualism" (which is just another form of group-think),the ultimate prison which is one's self, and more. Number Six, played by Patrick McGoohan himself, is absolutely relentless on his assault upon the Village which would keep him there against his will. And he desires to leave no matter what wholesome blandishments are offered to him. In that way, Number Six is a greater human being than most of us. He is more than a common human individual living out his life. He is an archetype. He can never quite escape but the octopoidal snares of the Village can never quite hold him. In that way, his story resembles the myth of Sisyphus. And yet Number Six is more than Sisyphus. I will not give the end of the series away but I will say that at the end Number Six comes to a true understanding of himself. The only good true understanding of one's self is if that understanding destroys the cycles. The strangest idea at the base of "The Prisoner" is the idea that morality itself, at its most secret heart, is the ultimate form of rebellion. Number Six has a devotion to pure justice, profound freedom, actual compassion ( as opposed to its sentimental counterfeits), and rigorous truth telling that is so extreme - more extreme even than the great Jewish prophets in the Bible - that he actually is an archetype, and not merely a single human being. Number One is the secret Archon that rules the Village. The Village is, of course, demon possessed, though the demons mostly reveal themselves as Angels of Light. Under Number One is paraded a grand series of Number Two's. They come and they go. Each one of them is yet one more attempt to seduce or utalize Number Six into giving up his freedom. One of the strangest things about this series is that Patrick McGoohan's idea of freedom rejects both the dionysian and the apollonian as categories of human thought and endeavour. McGoohan believes there is a third way that carves its own path, disdainful of the sharp and controlled, fascist geometries of the apollonian and compassionately rejectfull of the oblivion and disintegration offered by the dionysian. No better show exists. I don't think the fifth grade schoolboy bullies who dominate Hollywood or the television studios could allow such a great work to be made or shown on television today. But that is both their fault and their impotence. The Number Two's come and go but the Archetype prevails. If a top-level spy decided he didn't want to be a spy anymore, could he just walk into HQ and hand in his resignation? With all that classified knowledge in his head, would he be allowed to become a civilian again, free to go about his life? It is a favorite in my family and it always will. The film is based on Rudyard Kipling's classic book, and I not one compare to with bonified Jungle Book fans (the original book), but I love this film and the animated film version from Russia; and the original stories; and also I love movies/stories that are setted in Asia (the film is set in India). I love the main-title theme, it sets off the mood of the jungle. I love a scene at the beginning when Bagheera plays stork; You know "deliver" baby Mowgli to the wolf family like the stork. I also love the scene with the monkey whacking Baloo (who thought the monkey was Mowgli) on the nose (that's was funny). Overall this is a very entertaining film, and a song-filled cele ation of friendship, fun and adventure set in a lush and colorful world; I am still SHOCKED by the negativity towards it. Primely, and i don't know if it's the right word, i'm french so i beg you to forget me if i do too much mistake. While it does not possess any concrete plot of any kind, this is a perfect family movie/musical. It's the songs that make this the best Disney movie of all time, and the animation is top notch. Here are my three favourite scenes...p1. Trust in me (The Hypnotizing scene My favourite scene from the whole film when I was a kid, and now my daughter's favourite moment too. With some wonderful animation combined with the film's BEST song, as Kaa the giant python hypnotizes Mowgli in a tree top.p2 Tiger Fight Filled with lots of simply stunning and often intense animation, this provides a suitable climax to the movie.p. Baloo vs Monkeys A really funny scene in which Baloo is completely humiliated by a pack of King Louie's henchman.pThese scenes and a lot more make for a fantastic film. Now all we need is a two-disc special edition dvd. This is a great movie for the entire family! Kids will love it and it will ing back fond memories for adults who enjoyed it as children. The characters are lovable and the songs are great too, especially Baloo singing "The Bear Necessities". This is a completely sweet, innocent film. Like most Disney cartoons(eg.Bambi), there are some parts that are a bit sad but there is absolutely no reason why children shouldn't see this movie. I hope many more enjoy it for years to come. I know how many people gave five star reviews on here. Mine is not a five star review. I am giving you my straight opinion on this movie.pOne, I don't think this movie is fit for family viewing. Adults will not find it interesting or entertaining, and it hardly serves any purpose in teaching moral lessons to children. Two, this cartoon almost borders on animated pedophilia. It just looks sick and wrong, really, with this older, scary bear taking this young innocent away and teaching him his "bear ways." pThis is not charming entertainment. This is a pain. If you want a charming, older Disney movie you should check out their animated version of Robin Hood. The music in Robin Hood is far better as well. I have always disliked "The Jungle Book."Disney's 1967 animated feature IThe Jungle BookI seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. Loosely based on Rudyard Kipling's original, the film goes its own way as Disney animation will, but the strong characters and smart casting (George Sanders as the villainous tiger, Shere Khan) make it one of the studio's stronger feature-length cartoons. Songs include "The Bare Necessities" and "Trust in Me". --ITom KeoghIDisney's 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. The film has a great soundtrack (and that's one I like in a movie is a very good soundtrack) and I love the songs (my favorite is the romantic "So This is Love"); I love the mice too (they're cute). My favorite scene is after the narration, the little birds tried to wake Cinderella up in the morning, and I love it when Cinderella's animal friends fix up Cinderella's mother's dress, so she could go to the ball (until Drizella Anastasia tore it to bits The B******!). Enchanting, beautiful, endearing... such a wonderful Disney classic. I enjoy watching this movie with my daughter almost as much as I did as a child. Even my husband will watch this one, and has named his favorite scene to be when Jack the mouse pretends to be Lucifer the cat. A great movie.. just as great now as it was years ago. Adefinite must have for every movie collector This set is spectacular. Not only does it include the Platimun Edition DVD, it includes a reproduction film cell, commemroative book of the story and making of the movie. As well as character sketches. The DVD is loaded with extras! Including a sneak peak of Cinderella 3. Which totally blew me away. I won't spoil the surprise. If you love Cinderella and apprecaite the work and effort that goes into animated movies you'll love this set! While Cinderella is simpler and quieter than many other Disney features, the simplicity only adds to the beauty and magic of the movie. The animation is frequently mesmorizing. True to form, Disney takes a universally known story, and adds characters full of personality to ing it to life. Disney has always had a talent for developing loathsome villains, and Lady Tremain is among the most evil of them. You can feel that she's bitter through to the core. Many of the supporting characters lend a great deal of humor to the film. Jacques and Gus are both hillarious and charming, and watching their exploits with Lucifer is a riot. The poor Duke's interactions with the King are delightful, and the Fairy Godmother is quite a character. Cinderella herself is sugary sweet, and while she may not be the ideal role model for young girls in today's world of strong women, she is likeable and she shows us the value of friendship, hope, and faith. Cinderella includes a nice selection of original songs, including the adorable "Cinderelly", the sweet "So This is Love", and the classic "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes". This is a great choice for a movie to watch as a family, as it's entertaining for all ages, but it is simple enough and so innocent that your children can watch it by themselves and stay entertained time and time again.Worry not, Disney fans--this special edition DVD of the beloved iCinderellai won't turn into a pumpkin at the stroke of midnight. One of the most enduring animated films of all time, the Disney-fied adaptation of the gory Brothers Grimm fairytale became a classic in its own right, thanks to some memorable tunes (including "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," and the title song) and some endearingly cute comic relief. table align=left cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0" trtd align="center" img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/cinderella-slipper-small.jpg" border=0 align=top span class="tiny"The famous slipper (click for larger image) span tdtr table We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply won't have it, this uppity Cinderella thinking she's going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart, but perseverance, animal buddies, and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right. There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example, Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout. It's a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business, particularly Cinderella's rodent pals (dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine) and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer. There's also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke. It's a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today, which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying. i--David Kronkei p bDVD Featuresb p For another of its classic films, Disney delivers another dazzling DVD with a gorgeous, razor-sharp picture and 5.1 sound. (Note: The 1949 film is properly presented in full-screen format, 1.33 aspect ratio, because widescreen films weren't made until the '50s.) The best part of the supplemental features is the archival material, the absolute highlight of which is two unused songs, "Cinderella's Work Song" (in which Cinderella imagines multiplying herself à la the Sorcerer's Apprentice) and "Dancing on a Cloud." table align=right cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0" trtd align="center" img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/cinderella-godmother-small.jpg" border=0 align=top span class="tiny"Bippity-boppity-boo! In addition, a 38-minute documentary covers their contributions to specific characters of ICinderellaI as well as the film in general and the vocal cast. Also on the historical side is "The ICinderellaI That Almost Was," tracking the development of the project through decades of original Disney concepts, characters, and songs, including the 1922 silent "Laugh-o-Gram," which is also included in its entirety. p Additional musical material includes three radio programs and a short promo of the movie by Perry Como, in which he summarizes the plot amid some songs by the Fontaine Sisters, star Ilene Woods, and the host himself. table align=left cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0" trtd align="center" img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/cinderella-pumpkin-small.jpg" border=0 align=top span class="tiny"The pumpkin transformed (click for larger image) span tdtr table Seven other unused songs (17 minutes total) are available in audio only. But in 1941 both came together in one glorious time which would never be repeated. The picture earned Welles and company I believe around 10 OSCARS(if memory serves) of which only one was issued denying Welles his just due.Hearst had won the battle but in the end Welles won the war. On further reflection another thing that very much jumped out at me as I viewed this film was the cinematograpy. The camera work was phenomenal. The lighting, the angles and the placement of shots added totally to the entire feel and execution of this picture. And another aspect that I noticed was the editing.Of course as Welles controlled just about every aspect of the picture this,I would assume, could also be laid at his feet. But take for example a scene which involves Kane and his first wife.It lasts about five minutes in all but it shows them sitting at either end of a large table.Through several dissolves we see Kane and his wife going from a newly happily married couple to two distant and cold individuals.Brilliantly done. Technically this picture has been cleaned to perfection. It is a fine transfer. There are two discs here, one has the movie along with clips from the original trailer and opening night,a short interview with a co-star and two different commentaries. The second contains a special which(again) I only saw part of a few years back on PBS called:"The Battle for Citizen Kane",which was part of the American Experience series. You will notice that this disc alone is for sale so it is worth every penny to be included in this set. All in all I highly recommend this set to everyone.I have really no complaints in any department. While I don't think this is THE greatest movie ever made,I do believe it is one of the most important and best ever done. And when you compare it to some of the best works ever to come out of any film producing nation in the world it is no small praise indeed. people really need to watch this film 1 or 3 times, to really understand how great this film is,it took me ten years to really understand the story i watched twice or more and still learning something from it! it is just pure masterpiece from the beginning to the end of the film!the visual is just stunning!the story and plot was amazing! just the way they put the story and plot together is pure genius! what a master piece ! orson welles is a pure genius! the way he gets unknown support actors and actress and ing out the best in them, it is amazing!orson welle knows how to direct a complete film from the beginning to the end of the film ,from actors to actress to plot to story! i like to say this to FALCON DISDRESSED 12 citizen kane is a real human life of a story!it is about real life ,it is a very human story about a man that had everything in life ! but lost it all.it is about greedy childish, selfesh, selfcenter controlling sad sad sad man!maybe it was because he was spoil at, maybe it was because he didn't have a childhood!maybe it was because his parents neglected him and gave him away to a total stranger!or maybe the father was an abuser, maybe it was one thing or maybe it was a combination of of everything that happen in kanes life!all we know is when kanes was in his early twenties he wanted to help the poor people of the world from being step on by the greedy people of the world!but somewhere along his long life or early life something happen to him that made him they way he is! this is about a story a man could be you could be me could be about man down the street from you or even in a around the world !but it is a everyday story about any man in this world!it is real life story!FALCON DISDRESSED 12 YOU TENDED TO LIKE MOVIES THAT ARE S/F, ACTION,THRILLERS , COMEDY,HORRORS, AND B MOVIES,YOUR NOT MUCH OF A DRAMA FILM PERSON! It's not a bad movie, but it's totally overrated. Two things surprise me about it: the first one is how Welles got a cart blanche to make the movie the way he wanted to and why on earth this movie is valued so high by AFI. I think that Ingmar Berman said everything about this movie: "For me he's just a hoax. It's empty. It's not interesting. It's dead. Citizen Kane, which I have a copy of- is all the critics' darling, always at the top of every poll taken, but I think it's a total bore. Above all, the performances are worthless. The amount of respect that movie's got is absolutely unbelievable." For those who thought otherwise of Citizen Kane . . . You really have to take a step back and really read between the lines. The first time I saw it I never quite got the film nor did I care too much about it. It wasn't until I watched it several times before I fully-appreciated the film. (The use of light and camera angles.pYes . . . There is striking resemblence between the film and the life of Willian Randolph Hearst. So what!?! In order to understand the film, you have to understand the meaning behind the word 'Rosebud,' which refers to the sleigh that Kane had as a child. In essence . . . A childhood lost forever when his mother, even with much objection from the father, decides to sign over the papers in order for her son to have 'a better life'. In turn this lead to his downfall later in life. Who knows what would have happened had Kane had the opportunity to grow up with his natural parents. No minuscule "featurette" for the greatest movie ever made. The backbone for this grand two-disc set is the 1995 Oscar®-nominated documentary IThe Battle over Citizen KaneI, a very rich two-hour film on how this masterpiece was almost destroyed by Welles's adversary, William Randolph Hearst. A great remastered print is complemented by two running commentaries, the better one by critic Roger Ebert. Don't think you want a two-hour lecture by Mr. Ebert? Just listen to his 10-minute talk over the gallery of photographs from the movie (which you can flip through manually with your remote or see as a slide show), and you'll want more. Ad campaigns, storyboards, and even call sheets are included in this must-have DVD. I--Doug ThomasIArguably the greatest of American films, Orson Welles's 1941 masterpiece, made when he was only 26, still unfurls like a dream and carries the viewer along the mysterious currents of time and memory to reach a mature (if ambiguous) conclusion: people are the sum of their contradictions, and can't be known easily. Welles plays newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane, taken from his mother as a boy and made the ward of a rich industrialist. The result is that every well-meaning or tyrannical or self-destructive move he makes for the rest of his life appears in some way to be a reaction to that deeply wounding event. Written by Welles and Herman J. Mankiewicz, and photographed by Gregg Toland, the film is the sum of Welles's awesome ambitions as an artist in Hollywood. He pushes the limits of then-available technology to create a true magic show, a visual and aural feast that almost seems to be rising up from a viewer's subconsciousness. As Kane, Welles even ushers in the influence of Bertolt Brecht on film acting. This is truly a one-of-a-kind work, and in many ways is still the most modern of modern films from the 20th century. So far just available in the USA and this is right from the horses mouth.I feel a bit ripped off. This is a new release of a Disney classic that first appeared in 1959. As is my custom, I much prefer to watch an animated feature film with several of my younger grandchildren (ages 3-7) and did so again with Sleeping Beauty on its 50th anniversary. Once again, they were engrossed in the story line whereas I was somewhat more interested in how the quality of animation measures up (after 59 years) when compared and contrasted with recent films such as Toy Story and Toy Story 2, the three Shreks, Ratatouille, Cars, and Wall-E. It measures up remarkably well. Just as there is a certain charm in black-and-white classic films from the 1930's and 40's (e.g. Casablanca, The Little Shop Around the Corner, and It Happened One Night), the same is true of older Disney features (e.g. Dumbo, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Pinocchio) despite relatively less sophisticated animation. There were also generational differences when my companions and I examined the special features that include "Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough (a fully immersive virtual tour), an all-new "Enchanted Dance Game," the "Dragon Encounter Audio Sensory Experience," and an all-new "Making of Sleeping beauty." Predictably, my grandchildren much preferred the supplementary games whereas I was (as always) intrigued by the "behind the screen" material such as a discussion of the film by John Lasseter of Pixar, the film critic Leonard Maltin, and the Disney animator Andreas Deja. The production values in this new edition are superb, especially in the Blu-ray version. The running time of 75 minutes seems just about right. Whatever the ages of those who see this film and one or more of its numerous special features, they will find much to enjoy and appreciate. The story line is strikingly similar to the one in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. A daughter named Aurora is born to royal parents and then cursed to die by her 16th birthday by an evil fairy, Malificent. To protect her, three good fairies take her away, re-name her Briar Rose, and raise her themselves. A handsome prince meets her by chance, they fall in love, and agree to meet again soon. However, on the night of her 16th birthday, as she prepares to return to her parents and be crowned a princess, the evil fairy locates her and then.... Fortunately, everything eventually works out for Aurora as it also does for Snow White, Belle, and other Disney heroines. I highly recommend this 50th anniversary cele ation of one of Disney's most delightful animated films. Under-appreciated when first released, I think it will now receive the praise it so clearly deserves. Bravo! I have been trying to remember the first time I saw Walt Disney's "Sleeping Beauty," and I cannot remember if I ever saw it in a theater, caught it on television some time, or never sat down to watch it until it came out on videotape. What I did remember is not being particularly impressed by the movie. Certainly I did not consider it to be a classic Disney animated film like "Bambi" or "Cinderella," which is a way of saying that it was not on my "must have" list of Disney movies. Then I watched this 50th Anniversary Platinum Edition of "Sleeping Beauty" and all I can say is that however I saw this film for the first time it was NOT in this expanded version that has restored the original Super Technirama 70 dimensions of the film. I would have remembered a film that had art this gorgeous, even when it is this stylized and even when the music is classical high ow stuff. In the final analysis, "Sleeping Beauty" is clearly like no other Disney animated film, and that is a good thing. Disc 1 includes "Grand Canyon," a contemporaneous Disney feature (1958) that combines photography of the national park with Ferde Grofe's "Grand Canyon Suite," and it would be the classical music that is the common denominator to the main feature. Disc 2 has Games Activities over in the Cottage, while the Castle is devoted to the Backstage Disney special features. The games are pretty much geared for younger children (e.g., see "mop" and click on the item the word represents), so most of the goodies on the second disc are for the adults. There is a new documentary on "The Making of 'Sleeping Beauty,'" which combines archival footage with contemporary interviews. The "Never-Before-Seen Alternate Opening" and "Deleted Songs" are not animated but storyboard drawings accompanying the original, more traditional Disney-like, songs that were written for the film before Walt decided to go primarily with a score based on Tchaikovsky's ballet version of the fairy tale. If you have picked up any of these platinum editions, then you should be well versed in the sort of extras you can expect here in terms of storyboards, artwork, live-action reference footing, music video by some teenage singer, etc. The other one that stands out here is the fully immersive virtual tour of the Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough, a Disneyland attraction that actually existed before the part opened and years before the movie was released. Besides reminding us again that Walt Disney was a true visionary, the special features highlight the pivotal role of Eyvind Earle, the film's production designer. It was Earle who was given an amazing amount of freedom by Walt to design the settings and to paint most of the film's elaborate background paintings (which usually took a week to do, rather than a single day like in most animated films). The interviews with surviving members of the studio make it clear that Earle did not play well with others, but he was fully committed to creating a unique animated film and now that we can see the expanded version, there is no denying that is exactly what they accomplished. Consequently, I am confident I can remember in the future that "Sleeping Beauty" is a beautifully stylized animated film that is a unique jewel in the Disney crown. This film is another Disney Masterpiece,I really enjoyed it. I've always love fairy tales; even as an adult (I am 21 years old) I still love them, and "Sleeping Beauty" is one of my favorite fairy tales from Charles Perrault, along with "Cinderella" and "Puss n' Boots." I'd love the scenery,it's like stepping through a magic tapestry and going back in time to the Middle Ages; I'd also love the color-styling of Eyvind Earle, and THIS film was the reason Eyvind Earle became one of my favorite artists. This film has an excellent soundtrack with additional music from Peter Tchaikovsky's "Sleeping Beauty" ballet (I have the WHOLE score on LPs), and if there's one I love in a movie is a very,VERY good soundtrack. This film has a Top-notch voice acting like : · Mary Costa ... Princess Aurora/Briar Rose · Bill Shirley ... Prince Phillip · Eleanor Audley ... Maleficent · Barbara Luddy...Merryweather(The Blue Fairy) and... · Bill Thompson ... King Hubert (Philip's Dad) So watching this movie is definitely worth watching; so I give Sleeping Beauty two BIG thumbs up! One of my favorite movies (animated or nonanimated). THere is a quality and rich story that seems lacking in so many of todays movies (Disney movies included). The music just lifts you up and carries you into the Princess's world, and the ending leaves you with a pleasant sigh without being totally predictable. If you liked the Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast, you'll love this.Disney's 1959 animated effort was the studio's most ambitious to date, a widescreen spectacle boasting a gorgeous waltz-filled score adapting Tchaikovsky. In the 14th century, the malevolent Maleficent (not dissimilar to the wicked Queen in Disney's ISnow White and the Seven DwarfsI taunts a king that his infant Aurora will fatally prick her finger on a spinning wheel before sundown on her 16th birthday. This, of course, would deny her a happily-ever-after with her true love. Things almost but not quite turn out that way, thanks to the assistance of some bubbly, bumbling fairies named Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. It's not really all that much about the title character--how interesting can someone in the middle of a long nap be, anyway? Instead, those fairies carry the day, as well as, of course, good Prince Phillip, whose battle with the malevolent Maleficent in the guise of a dragon has been co-opted by any number of animated films since. See it in its original glory here. And Malificent's castle, filled with warthogs and demonic imps in a maca e dance cele ating their evil ways, manages a certain creepy grandeur. I--David KronkeIMost of the beauty of Disney's ISleeping BeautyI DVD comes from the dazzling restored picture that looks as sharp and vivid as films produced decades later. You can watch it in its 70mm widescreen anamorphic glory or in pan-and-scan format, but if you think you'll prefer the latter, a widescreen-to-fullscreen comparison of the "Once Upon a Dream" scene will show you how much you're missing. There's a bevy of historical material: a commentary track that includes art director Eyvind Earle, Mary Costa (the voice of Aurora), and supervising animator Ollie Johnston; a 1997 16-minute documentary that covers various aspects of production, especially the film's distinctive animation style; shorter featurettes that expand upon the documentary; art galleries; and three vintage short films related to ISleeping BeautyI--"4 Artists Paint 1 Tree," in which the animators demonstrate their craft, the biopic "The Peter Tchaikovsky Story," and "Grand Canyon," the CinemaScope depiction of Ferde Grofé's famous suite. Kid fare includes the usual trivia game, art projects, a sing-along, a No Secrets music video, and a mistake-proof coloring game. The set should give you pleasant moments and a lot of background on the history of tv series, suspense, and of course Hitchcock himself. Besides, there are true pearls. However, if you want intense thrills, go for something else. Because this one is definitely subtler. I'm enjoying this DVD despite Universal's efforts to live down to their usual standards. I could compare the handling of this series disfavourably against the work done on preparing other classic series (Twilight Zone leaps to mind) but other reviews have and will mention this. I wish only to warn AGAINST reading the Episode Summaries!!! Perhaps some studio exec - possibly the one who decided to do the show "on the cheap" - thought it would be wise to give away much of the story prior to viewing. Maybe they'd be TOO suspenseful otherwise? Five stars for the show itself. Minus two stars for the botched audio/video job, a lack of features worthy of the studio's Marx Brothers dvd release and a generally lacklustre effort on this dvd. Poor Hitch must be rolling in his grave.... After reading the reviews on amazon.com, I didn't know there was so many problems with the quality of the dvd set. I decided to write a second review. I think that Patricia Hitchcock and the others who are still alive and were involved with the series should have a good talk with Universal. I think that Universal should show more respect for Hitchcock's work by restoring the episodes and to show some respect to customers with some audio commentaries for certain episodes and longer documentaries. I am sure that most people will spend a bit more money for the futures sets if they improve the quality and add more extras. I gave 5 stars not for the quality of the dvd set, but, because of the series itself. Hitchcock was a genius. I know he was not involve with the series on a regular bases, but, you can see that the people in charge were close to him. I think Universal should have restored the episodes, the series started 50 years ago. The quality of the episodes are not always great. The extras are very limited. His movies were restored by Universal, they should have done the same thing with the Alfred Hitchcock Presents series. Universal is very lucky that I am a Hitchcock buff. The series lasted many years, maybe, there is still time to restore some episodes. I just hope Universal reads the reviews There is no episode guide booklet that comes with this DVD, which in my opinion is a MAJOR minus! Not that I wouldn't have purchased it anyway, but how cheap can you be not to include a leaflet, something! It didn't even have to be glossy. I'm so disappointed.pOther than that, the sound seems to be of decent quality. But I'm not that hardcore and am just glad to have Hitchcock Presents on DVD.When it premiered on CBS on October 2, 1955, iAlfred Hitchcock Presentsi was an instant hit destined for long-term popularity. The series' original half-hour anthology format provided a perfect showcase for stories of mystery, suspense, and the maca e that reflected Hitchcock's established persona. Every Sunday at 9:30 p.m., the series began with the familiar theme of Gounod's "Funeral March of a Marionette" (which would thereafter be inextricably linked with Hitchcock), and as Hitchcock's trademark profile sketch was overshadowed by the familiar silhouette of Hitchcock himself, the weekly "play" opened and closed with the series' most popular feature: As a good-natured host whose inimitable presence made him a global cele ity, Hitchcock delivered droll, dryly sardonic introductions and epilogues to each week's episode, flawlessly written by James Allardyce and frequently taking polite pot-shots at CBS sponsors, or skirting around oadcast standards (which demanded that no crime could go unpunished) by humorously explaining how the show's killers and criminals were always ought to justice... though always with a nod and a wink to the viewer.p This knowing complicity was Hitchcock's pact with his audience, and the secret to his (and the series') long-term success. It's also what attracted a stable of talented writers whose teleplays, both original and adapted, maintained a high standard of excellence. Hitchcock directed four of the first season's 39 episodes, including the premiere episode "Revenge" (a fan favorite, with future iPsychoi costar Vera Miles) and the season highlight "Breakdown," with Joseph Cotten as a car-accident victim, paralyzed and motionless, who's nearly left for dead; it's a perfect example of visual and narrative economy, executed with a master's touch. (The fourth episode, "Don't Come Back Alive," is also a popular favorite, with the kind of sinister twist that became a series trademark.) Robert Stevenson directed the majority of the remaining episodes with similar skill, serving tightly plotted tales (selected by associate producers Joan Harrison and Norman Lloyd) by such literary greats as Ray Bradbury, Robert Bloch, Cornell Woolrich, Dorothy L. Sayers, and John Collier. Adding to the series' prestige was a weekly roster of new and seasoned stars, with first-season appearances by Cloris Leachman, Darren McGavin, Everett Sloane, Peter Lawford, Charles Bronson, Barry Fitzgerald, John Cassavetes, Joanne Woodward, Thelma Ritter, and a host of Hollywood's best-known character players. With such stellar talent on weekly display, iAlfred Hitchcock Presentsi paved the way for iThrilleri, iThe Twilight Zonei, and other series that maximized the anthology format's storytelling potential.p Packed onto three double-sided DVDs, these 39 episodes hold up remarkably well, and while some prints show the wear and tear of syndication, they look and sound surprisingly good (although audio compression will cause many viewers to turn up the volume). The 15-minute bonus featurette, "Alfred Hitchcock Presents: A Look Back" is perfunctory at best, but it's nice to see new anecdotal interviews with Norman Lloyd, assistant director Hilton Green, and Hitchcock's daughter Pat (a frequent performer on these episodes), who survived to see their popular series benefit from the archival convenience of DVD. i--Jeff Shannoni |

TORONTO — Health Canada has begun public consultations on whether ski and snowboard helmets should be required by law to meet new guidelines by the Canadian Standards Association.
The federal department announced the consultation process Tuesday after the CSA said it is introducing certification testing next month for manufacturers of snow sport helmets under its new standard.
However, CSA certification is voluntary - ski and snowboard helmet manufacturers do not have to submit their products for scrutiny in order to sell them in Canada.
That could change if Health Canada decides after consultation wraps up June 1 to move ahead with regulation of the industry. One possibility is that mandatory CSA certification could be required under the Hazardous Products Act.
"The department can put in place restrictions that allow only helmets meeting certain safety criteria, such as those in CSA standards, to be sold in Canada," Health Canada spokeswoman Christelle Legault said Tuesday by email.
"Health Canada is considering whether the new standard should be referenced in Canada's product safety legislation."
But Legault said the federal government cannot pass a law requiring skiers and snowboarders to wear a helmet while hitting the slopes and pipes. Only provinces, territories and municipalities have the jurisdiction to enact such legislation.
Despite the lack of definitive action, CSA vice-president John Walter views Health Canada's announcement as a positive sign.
"I think this is a very serious indication from Health Canada that they understand the value of this standard and they understand the need to consider the adoption into regulation," he said.
"If that happens, you couldn't sell any other (helmet) in Canada except one that met this standard."
But Liberal MP Hedy Fry, who has tabled a private member's bill calling for non-CSA approved snow sport helmets to be banned under the Hazardous Products Act, accused the Conservative government of dragging its feet on the issue.
"This government does consultation on everything," she said from Ottawa. "It's a simple stalling mechanism to go and do consultation."
Fry has been urging the government to use a Governor-in-Council order to add recreational ski and snow sport helmets to the list of products already covered by the existing act, which includes hockey helmets and face masks, and lacrosse helmets.
"And with a simple stroke of the pen through government council, the cabinet could agree to add it to the list," she said. "This is a simple preventive thing. It's not going to cost the government a penny."
CSA International will begin offering testing for certification of ski and snowboard helmets in Montreal next month, said Walter, noting that the new Canadian standard exceeds safety requirements under U.S. and European guidelines.
The non-profit organization's announcement follows the death of actress Natasha Richardson, who sustained a brain injury in a fall at Quebec's Mont-Tremblant ski resort. She was not wearing a helmet.
Helmets given the CSA stamp of approval would have to meet minimum levels of shock absorption, stability and strength, and provide protection to specified areas of the head most vulnerable to injury. The standard also applies to helmets for tobogganing and sledding.
"These helmets are meant to sustain multiple impacts, where a number of helmets that are manufactured are only supposed to (take) one severe fall and they should be thrown out and another one purchased," Walter said

With a few quick wing beats, six white doves fluttered up and away from a cage in East Oakland and disappeared into Tuesday's darkening sky.
More News
Four doves symbolized the Oakland police officers slain in the line of duty over the weekend. One represented mourning; another, hope.
A thousand people pressed into a three-block area around the slaying site at 74th and MacArthur Boulevard, where the doves were released. The mourners wept, sang songs and and prayed for the fallen officers and for the city's healing.
"Nobody won in this," said East Oakland rapper Ryan Allen, who attended the "Hope and Healing" vigil organized by the City of Oakland. "But I'm here because there needs to be peace out here in the streets and the way to do that has to start with me."
City and religious leaders gave speeches, thanking police for protecting the public and urging the public to take a stand against violence.
"To see so many people here today, in the very same community we lost four officers, means so much to us," said acting Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan. "We're going to get through this with the support of our families and with the support of you, the community."
The stretch of MacArthur where the officers were fatally shot Saturday by a gunman later killed by police is among the most crime-ridden areas of Oakland.
Residents complain of frequent robberies, drug dealing and shootings. Many said Tuesday that they were devastated by the officers' slayings.
"I've lived in East Oakland all my life, and I need the police," said Clarence Ellis, 53, a retired AC Transit bus driver who went to the vigil.
Ellis is being hailed as a hero in Oakland for his role in Saturday's events. While waiting for the bus on MacArthur Boulevard around 1 p.m. Saturday, he heard gunfire and rushed to see two motorcycle officers down. He knelt beside Sgt. Mark Dunakin and began performing cardio-pulmonary resusitation.
"I just saw that someone needed help," he said. "I wasn't tripping, I just tried to save him. I knew it had to be done, so I did it."
Lovelle Mixon, 26, a wanted parolee who had been in and out of prison, had been pulled over in his Buick by Dunakin, 40, and Officer John Hege, 41, when he gunned them down.
Two hours later, he fatally shot two more officers, SWAT team Sgts. Daniel Sakai, 35, and Ervin Romans, 43, as police stormed the apartment where Mixon was hiding. Three other officers shot and killed Mixon in the gunbattle.
At Tuesday's vigil, mourners clutched candles and listened to inspirational songs performed by Oakland's Interfaith Gospel Choir and prayers from local religious leaders.
Pauline Attaway, who lives in the neighborhood, brought her family to the vigil.
"I'm here to show support for the officers and the family of the guy who did it," she said. Nobody won, but we need our officers. I'm very sad."
Carlos Carmona, who runs the after-school program at Oakland Technical High School, said he came to the vigil because he had met Sgt. Dunakin while he was temporarily enrolled at Oakland's police academy.
"All(Dunakin) talked about was his dedication to his family, the city and the department," said Carmona. "He was a well-respected, good man. I came down here to pay my respects."
On the sidelines, a few protesters demanded equal respect for Mixon, who they said was a victim of what they called a broken prison system and a generally racist society. Family and friends of Mixon, a parolee, said he likely opened fire on the officers because he feared returning to prison.
